FIDE refused to return Russia and Belarus to the international arena

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) left in force the restrictions for Russian and Belarusian chess players. The FIDE General Assembly was held on Sunday, September 22, in Budapest.

Before the vote, the FIDE Council recommended the general assembly not to completely remove the restrictions on Russians and Belarusians, but to allow children under 12 and athletes with disabilities from Russia and Belarus to participate in team competitions.

The vote to lift sanctions on Russians was held in an open format. Delegates voted on three points: 1. To support the recommendation of the FIDE Council. 2. Keep all sanctions in place. 3. Remove all sanctions.

66 delegates voted for the first option, 41 for the second, 21 for the third, and 11 abstained. 60 delegates did not participate.

Representatives of the aggressor country were punished for including federations from the annexed regions of Ukraine in the national association.

Recall that starting from March 2022, the Council of the International Chess Federation suspended the teams of Russia and Belarus from participation in tournaments held under the auspices of the organization. However, the Russians and Belarusians have the right to play in individual competitions under the FIDE flag.
