"He felt unwell": Russia announces Navalny's death in a penal colony

Russian politician Alexei Navalny died in a penal colony on February 16. The Russian Federation said that the prisoner allegedly felt sick after a walk and fainted.

The Federal Penitentiary Service claims that Navalny was given all the necessary resuscitation measures, but "they did not give positive results." It should be noted that the politician opposed to Vladimir Putin was held in the Polar Wolf penal colony No. 3 in the village of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District of the Russian Federation.

The incident occurred after a walk: Navalny felt unwell and lost consciousness "almost immediately," the press service of the aggressor country's Federal Penitentiary Service said.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the unexpected death of the prisoner. He said that "the Federal Penitentiary Service is engaged in all checks, no special orders are needed here."

Less than an hour after the official announcement, RosMedia named a probable cause. "One of the priority versions of Alexei Navalny's death is a broken blood clot," the propagandists wrote.

The politician's lawyer, Leonid Solovyov, said around 13:40 (Kyiv time) that he had visited his client on February 14. At that time, Navalny was doing fine.

The prisoner's spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh wrote on Twitter at 13:38: "The Federal Penitentiary Service for the Yamalo-Nenets District is spreading the news about the death of Alexei Navalny in prison cellblock 3. We have no confirmation of this yet. Alexei's lawyer is now flying to Kharp. As soon as we have any information, we will report it."

Meanwhile, the Investigative Department of the Yamalo-Nenets District of the Russian Federation has officially announced the start of an investigation into the politician's death. "Following the procedure established by law, a set of investigative and operational measures is being taken to establish all the circumstances of what happened," the press service wrote on social media.

The day before his death (February 15), Navalny appeared in court via video link. He was laughing, and there were no visible problems with his health on the recording.

As a reminder, the so-called oppositionist was detained on January 17, 2021, when he returned to Moscow from Berlin through Sheremetyevo Airport. The Russian had been on the wanted list since December 29, 2020.

Before that (since the end of August), Navalny had been undergoing treatment in Germany after an attempt to poison him with a substance from the Novichok group.

Navalny was initially imprisoned for 2 years and 8 months (fraud and money laundering to the detriment of Yves Rocher Vostok). Later, he was sentenced to 9 years in a maximum security prison and fined 1.2 million rubles on charges of fraud and contempt of court. In August 2023, Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in a special regime colony on six articles on "extremism."

The Freedom of Russia movement (whose soldiers are fighting the Russian invaders together with the Ukrainian Defense Forces) noted: Navalny is an ambiguous figure in the Russian opposition.

"Views on his activities vary from complete rejection to unconditional trust. But it cannot be denied that for millions (indeed millions) of Russians – from schoolchildren who protested for him to pensioners who donated to the activities of the FBK – he has become a symbol of resistance, the most visible political prisoner."

The press service believes that "Putin killed him, as he has killed thousands of undesirables before."

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Navalny said that terrorist Igor Girkin (Strelkov) was detained illegally. Moreover, he called the war criminal a "political prisoner".
