Russia fails to test Sarmat ballistic missile

Russia has failed to test the RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile at the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the Arkhangelsk region. It exploded deep in the mine, which likely caused fires and destruction of the range around it.

This was reported on the social network X (Twitter) by a user with the nickname MeNMyRC. He refers to satellite images of the test site and permission to voice the data from OSINT analyst MT_Anderson.

"An attempt by the Russian nuclear deterrent forces to test a new intercontinental ballistic missile on September 21, 2024, ended in complete failure and a fire at the launch site," the statement said.

The RS-28 Sarmat, which Russians also call "Satan," probably exploded in the missile silo, leaving a crater and destroying the test site. The satellite images show a large gap in the ground.

The Plesetsk Cosmodrome covers an area of 1762 square meters, stretching 46 km from north to south and 82 km from east to west. The cause of the accident is unknown. The Russian weapon has a liquid-fueled rocket engine, so it is speculated that the incident could have been caused by its detonation.

A fire near the missile silo is cited as additional evidence of the failure. According to analysts, it was caused by an engine malfunction and a fall, which caused such destruction of the missile site and a fire in the forest.

"Note the four fire trucks responding to the forest fire," MeNMyRC emphasized.

OSINT experts added that this is at least the fourth of all five failed attempts to test a "combat operational" heavy intercontinental ballistic missile (the Russians claimed success only once - on April 20, 2022). It entered service in 2023. The development itself is positioned by the Russian Ministry of Defense as a "new step" in ensuring nuclear deterrence, but attempts to test-fire the Sarmat have failed.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, a secret facility in the village of Oktyabrsky was hit by a UAV attack on the Tver region of the Russian Federation. According to rumors among the local population, there are missile silos there, and a Sarmat missile is on alert, so they rushed to evacuate.
