A new series called Shogun is being actively discussed online. Critics call the new FX show the successor to the epic fantasy series Game of Thrones.

The first two episodes of Shogun were aired last week, but have already managed to win over viewers, writes the Daily Mail. Film critics, in turn, described the novelty as "beautiful" and "exciting". It is reported that many scenes contain images of blood, so the show should appeal to Game of Thrones fans.

Currently, the series has an impressive 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which indicates the general approval of the surveyed critics.

"Shogun is based on the hugely popular 1975 novel by James Clavell. The plot tells the fictionalized story of an English sailor who was shipwrecked.

He becomes part of the court of a daimyo, a Japanese feudal lord. At the same time, we learn the story of a female samurai who tries to assert herself despite coming from a poor family.

Cosmo Jarvis plays the role of John Blackthorne, a Westerner caught up in Japanese intrigue, while Japanese star Hiroyuki Sanada plays the daimyo and Anna Sawai appears as the mysterious Lady Mariko.

USA Today journalist Kelly Lawler praised Shogun for the way "epic borders on light" and for its "beautiful, rich and deeply compelling" picture. According to IndieWire's Ben Travers, despite the abundance of violence, Shogun demonstrates a vision of how leaders can transcend corruption and petty competition. "Rather than overemphasizing the individuals who wage brutal wars, the series ultimately focuses on diplomacy as a means to peace," he wrote.

Despite comparisons to Game of Thrones, the new FX series is more of a historical drama, although its characters are only partially inspired by real events and personalities. New episodes will be broadcast weekly. The show will have 10 episodes in total. The finale of Shogun will air on April 23, 2024. Given that the series is positioned as a limited series, the finale is likely to be the conclusion of the story.
