Covered in black sand: where is the most dangerous beach in the world

Alina MilsentNews
Reynisfjara

Iceland is a country of unique natural landscapes. Tourists may be surprised to learn that one of the most beautiful beaches is also the most dangerous. Reynisfjara, on the southern coast of Iceland, was named the best beach in Europe in 2023, according to the annual Tripadvisor rating.

Reynisfjara is a stunning black sand, basalt cliffs, and rough ocean waves. The volcanic sand contrasting with the white waves of the Atlantic Ocean creates an incredible landscape. The Express explains why this beach is so dangerous.

The black sand was formed as a result of volcanic eruptions and gives the beach a unique, almost alien look. The hexagonal basalt columns resembling organ pipes are also the result of volcanic activity and create an impressive natural attraction.

Despite its beauty, Reynisfjara is a dangerous place because of strong waves and underwater currents.

There are sleeper waves (also called royal or rogue waves) on the Reynisfjara – these are massive coastal water flows that suddenly appear among smaller waves. These waves reach incredible heights and go much further inland. They are unpredictable and can appear at any time. The phenomenon is caused by a steep drop in the ocean floor near the coast.

This, combined with strong ocean currents, creates extremely dangerous conditions. If you are knocked down by a wave, you will quickly be pulled down by the current – and the icy water can cause hypothermia in a few minutes.

You can't turn your back on the ocean. As a popular travel site notes, "It's not worth dying for a selfie."

The beach also suffers from the danger of rock falling from the cliffs. Reinisfiara has its traffic light system so that people can get to the beach safely. When the yellow light is on, visitors should not enter the yellow zone. When the red light is on, tourists should not enter the red zone (stay behind the light sign).

Visitors are strongly advised to stay on the shore, which offers a great view of the stunning scenery from a safe distance.

There are no lifeguards or coastguards on the beach, and the conditions are too dangerous, so the chances of rescue are minimal.

Rules for visiting Reynisfjara Beach:

  • read the safety signs carefully and follow the warnings;
  • stay away from the water;
  • be especially careful if you come with children;
  • pay attention to the tides;
  • keep a careful distance from the rocks.

On Reynisfjara, you must not:

  • approach the edge of the shore and rocks;
  • swim or surf;
  • take risks while helping others.

You can get to the beach either by rented car or as part of an organized tour. The journey from Reykjavik will take about 2.5 hours.
