Spain is one of the European countries that suffers from overtourism the most. However, people mostly choose destinations such as Barcelona, Valencia, or Cordoba. Stll, less popular locations can offer just as good a vacation.

For example, the colorful neighbor of Benidorm in the Alicante region is Villajoyosa. The Mirror spoke about it in more detail. The name of the settlement is translated as "city of joy". And there is really something to be happy about. Local restaurants offer a huge selection of tapas, mouthwatering seafood dishes, caught locally, excellent Spanish wines, and desserts.

Getting to Villajoyosa is not that difficult - it is just a 30-minute drive from Alicante airport. The choice of accommodation is quite large. First of all, pay attention to first-line hotels, where the price of a room for two starts at USD 132 (UAH 5,500) per night. Staying in an apartment in the city will be much cheaper - from USD 55 (UAH 2,300) per night.

Be sure to explore the streets of Villajoyosa on foot as you probably won't see such colorful houses anywhere else in the world. The photos of Las Casas de Colores brought back from here will be unforgettable. However, keep in mind that these houses are private property and people live in them, so try not to disturb their peace. According to a legend, local houses were painted so brightly that fishermen who traditionally live here could get home in bad weather. There is also one that tells the walls were painted with leftover boat paint, which is why they look so unusual.

If you move away from the beach, you will see the Cases Penjants de Vilajoiosa - the hanging houses of Vilajoiosa. They seem to hang over the Amadorio Reservoir, creating a picturesque backdrop for the city.

Vilajoyosa is also well known for its chocolate production. Of the 29 factories that once operated here, only three remain, but each offers visitors its own museum. The Valor Chocolate Museum, established in 1998, was once a small family-run factory. You can also choose Perez Chocolates and Clavileño Chocolates. And in early August, the city hosts Villjoyosa Xocolatíssíma, a chocolate festival. Culinary master classes, tastings, and excursions are held for its visitors.

Of course, Villajoyosa also offers tourists luxurious beaches. As in most cities on the Costa Blanca, the holiday season here lasts all year round, but the places near the warm ocean are not crowded, so you can definitely enjoy your vacation.
