Clean air and safe streets: Bern has been chosen as the best city to live in Europe

In today's world, when people are increasingly moving from one country to another, the question of where is better is becoming more and more relevant. After all, life in a new place mustn't bring discomfort. This year, it was quite difficult to choose the best city, as a wave of housing shortages began in Europe.

It turned out that Bern, Switzerland, has been the most comfortable city to live in for three years in a row. This follows from a study by the consulting company ECA International, which analyzed 500 cities.

"With the best amenities, minimal air pollution, and low crime rates, Bern is very attractive for migrants and their families. Cities in Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia join the top ten most liveable places," said Neil Ashman, senior analyst at ECA's location rankings.

Despite its beauty, comfortable climate, and gorgeous landscapes, Switzerland still has some nuances that Ukrainians may not like. Although the country has high salary rates, it is also rich in equally high prices. For example, bread can be bought there for an average of 200 hryvnias.

The Swiss temperament is also somewhat different from Ukrainians. They are much more reserved in their communication, but they like to know everything that happens in the lives of their neighbors.

Kyiv is also on the list. Unfortunately, due to Russia's full-scale invasion, the city fell dramatically in the ranking from 137th to 218th place. But in 2018, life in the Ukrainian capital was better than in Moscow (146th place).

Other countries in the ranking

Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Stavanger in Norway, Geneva in Switzerland, and Copenhagen in Denmark took the next positions in the ranking.

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, used to be at the top of the ranking, but now it has moved up to fifth place. This jump was due to a lack of housing.

"Copenhagen is still a great city for expats, it remains very livable, but recently there has been a shortage of housing, which is why it has dropped a bit in the ranking," Ashman explained.

In the UK, Edinburgh (17th in the ranking) is the most liveable city, ahead of London (37th). "London remains a very attractive city for expats with excellent amenities, a wide public transportation network, and recreational opportunities," the analyst said.
