Sights in Kyiv

The history of Ukraine began long before Volodymyr's reign. But it was during his reign that Rus' transformed from a small state in eastern Europe into a true world leader on par with Byzantium or Rome. It is not surprising that Kyiv has many monuments associated with this iconic figure and his descendants. What to see during the weekend? Let us tell you!

Golden Gate

One of the most important architectural structures of the Kyivan Rus period. Its construction began around 1037 during the reign of Grand Duke Yaroslav the Wise.

At that time, the gate served as the main entrance to Kyiv and was part of the city's powerful defense system. Over the centuries, it suffered significant damage as a result of numerous wars and sieges. It was only in 1982 that reconstruction began.

Be sure to go inside. Now it is a museum. It contains the remains of the original structures that have survived to this day.

The landmark is located at 40A Volodymyrska Street.

St. Sophia Cathedral

The construction of the shrine lasted from 1017 to 1037. It was conceived as a symbol of the victory over the Pechenegs and the strengthening of Christianity in Kyivan Rus.

The chapel was named in honor of the martyr Sophia. Initially, it served several functions simultaneously. Grand Dukes were crowned here, important ceremonies were held, and ambassadors were received. Worship services were held here. It was also used to store chronicles and treasures.

Inside, the walls of the shrine are decorated with amazing frescoes and mosaics with a total area of 3260 square meters. The masterpieces of the 11th century not only depict religious subjects but also give an idea of the secular life of Byzantium. You can also see authentic inscriptions left by visitors over the millennia. Among them, the autograph of Prince Volodymyr Monomakh himself is particularly valuable.

Be sure to visit the tomb of Yaroslav the Wise. It is located in the eastern part of the cathedral. It features elements of ancient Christian art and patterns of cypress trees, palm trees, fish, and birds.

It is located at 24 Volodymyrska Street.

St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery

The shrine was founded by Grand Prince Sviatopolk Izyaslavych in 1108. It was built as a symbol of divine protection over Kyiv. By the way, the ruler is buried here. In 1936, the church was destroyed by supporters of Soviet rule, after which it was restored, but in the Baroque style.

The holy place is often called the Golden-Domed Church because of its gilded domes. Here it is worth climbing the three-tiered bell tower 48 meters high. The top offers an incredible view of the Dnipro River and St. Sophia Square.

It is located at 8 Trykhsvyatytelska Street.

Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God

The religious center is located at the foot of Castle Hill on Kontraktova Square. Construction began in 1132 under the leadership of Kyivan Prince Mstyslav the Great, the son of Volodymyr Monomakh. It was the first building in the city to be constructed entirely of brick.

Over the centuries, the church was destroyed and rebuilt several times. It suffered during the Mongol invasion in the 13th century and was destroyed by fire in the early 1800s. After Ukraine gained independence, the church was rebuilt.

We advise you to see a copy of the icon of the Virgin Mary, which is almost indistinguishable from the original. By the way, you can read about the location in one of the most famous works of ancient Russian literature - "The Tale of Igor's Campaign".

St. Cyril's Church

The shrine was founded by Prince Vsevolod Olhovych as a family burial vault. It is interesting that the religious building managed to survive and preserve most of the original frescoes of the 12th century. It also became part of the St. Sophia Museum and has been a national monument since 1994. Nowadays, regular services are held in the church: every Saturday, Sunday, and on major Orthodox holidays.

It is located at 12 Olena Teliha Street.
