Chinese taikonauts have a smart assistant in space: what the robot Xiao Han can do. Photos and videos

Chinese taikonauts aboard the Tiangong space station have a smart assistant. The robot, named Xiao Han, which translates to small space, executes various commands.

The members of the current Shenzhou 19 mission, Cai Xuizhe, Song Lyndon, and Wang Haose, work with Xiao Han using special software. In this interaction, they conduct a variety of experiments related to the spatial relationship between humans and robots, the behavioral characteristics of smart machines, and multimodal interaction technologies, Space.com writes.

According to China Central Television (CCTV), the goal of these experiments is to help improve mission efficiency by promoting more effective interaction between astronauts and robotic systems.

In the published video, you can see how Xiao Han moves and navigates in microgravity, and can also take photos on command. But in the future, the smart assistant will perform more complex tasks, Chinese experts say.

"In the future, it will also be able to perform various functions such as cockpit inspections and resource management through upgrades," said Wang Haose, China's first female space flight engineer and crew member.

As a reminder, the Shenzhou 19 crew launched to the Tiangong space station on October 29, beginning a six-month mission. On December 18, the taikonauts made their first spacewalk as part of the mission.

It is known that China completed the construction of Tiangong in 2022. This orbital outpost, which is about 20% smaller than the International Space Station, will be in constant use and will operate for at least 10 years.
