Chinese scientists claim to have created a giant weapon inspired by the Star Wars movie, a real-life "Death Star" that can destroy enemy satellites in orbit.

The new weapon is capable of focusing multiple microwave beams onto a single target. The weapon system has recently completed experimental trials for potential military use, The Sun reports.

What are the dangers of China's new weapon?

According to experts, China is developing a high-powered microwave (HPM) weapon capable of disabling radar systems, computers, communications infrastructure, and even missiles and satellites.

The new type of powerful weapon, the Death Star, combines electromagnetic waves with ultra-precise synchronization to merge into a powerful energy beam.

According to scientists, each component that produces microwaves should not exceed 170 picoseconds - or trillionths of a second. That is, the required accuracy is much higher than that of atomic clocks used for GPS satellites.

However, Chinese scientists believe they have cracked the problem and achieved "ultra-high time precision synchronisation." They claim to have achieved this synchronization by connecting vehicles transmitting microwaves using optical fibers.

Chinese scientists say the latest technology can jam signals from US GPS and other satellites, "achieving multiple goals such as teaching and training, new technology verification, and military exercises."

The specifics of the weapon, its parameters, and its purpose remain secret. However, experts have previously noted that China's research into energy programs is likely aimed at destroying the sensors of US precision strike weapons and satellites.

Chinese scientific publications claim that microwave beam weapons are being developed more for use on space platforms such as satellites, while advanced lasers are being created for ground, sea, or air targets.

Inspired by science fiction

The Death Star is the most famous superweapon in the Star Wars franchise. However, the new Chinese technology is somewhat different from the on-screen prototype, researchers say.

The main weapon of the Death Star uses kyber crystals that can generate enough power with multiple laser guns merging at a single point, creating a beam so powerful that it can destroy entire planets.

Fortunately, China's latest development cannot do that, scientists reassure.
