Cheap beer and hotels up to $110: the most affordable city in Europe for vacation has been named

Athens, the capital of Greece, has been named the best place in Europe for tourists in 2023 due to its affordable prices. The city impresses with low hotel prices that do not exceed $110, cheap beer and wine, and many activities for history buffs and those who love clubbing.

This was reported by the Daily Star. The historic city is filled with incredible sights, as well as food and drinks that you can enjoy without spending your entire budget.

The study, conducted by Holiday Cars, analyzed the average price of a number of services that are most often used during a vacation. The list includes a cup of coffee, a bottle of beer at a bar, a soft cocktail, a glass of wine, a three-course meal for two, and a bus return to the airport.

Experts also calculated the cost of a 48-hour travel card, a sightseeing bus tour, the most popular cultural attractions, the best museum, art gallery, and the cost of two nights in a three-star hotel for a weekend. Then they determined which cities were the most profitable and linked it to cultural, historical, and gastronomic aspects.

All of this allowed them to determine the best place for vacationers in Europe. Athens took first place. The city is bursting at the seams with historical monuments: from the Temple of Zeus Olympian to the ancient Athenian Agora and the Acropolis. The entrance to the Acropolis, one of the most famous landmarks, is quite expensive - about 21,82$. However, you can spend hours exploring the ancient ruins and admiring the panorama of the ancient city.

In addition, although some of the historical sights are quite expensive, this is offset by the most affordable food and accommodation. Athens is the city where you can find the cheapest three-course dinner for two people, including homemade wine, a bus tour of the city and a double room for the weekend in a 3-star hotel.

The total cost of the weekend in Athens was about 250,87$. This includes tickets to the best museum averaging 10,36$, while the art gallery cost 8,18$. The airport transfer was only 11,73$, a soft drink was 2,73$, and coffee was 3,27$.

According to Price of Travel, a beer in a local store will cost you about 1,64$, and at a bar - from 4,36$ to 6,27$. However, Athens is so interesting that if you visit it for a weekend, you will want to stay longer.

In addition to historical monuments, there are a number of fantastic museums from the National Archaeological to the Museum of Ancient Greece. Those looking for something more unusual can head to the Roman Tomb in Zara, an ancient Roman burial site.

The Gennadius Library contains a large collection of books and manuscripts about ancient Greece, and the Numismatic Museum has one of the largest coin collections in the world. Or you can take a stroll through the Panathenaic Stadium, passing by the place where ancient gladiators once walked.

Those looking for a great evening out can visit the bar at Syntagma, a great place where all the cocktails are inspired by the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, including syrups and unusual ingredients.

You can also try Bios in Kerameikos, where the rooftop bar combines a movie theater, an exhibition area, and an underground club. You will sit on beach chairs, metal barrels and benches while sipping drinks.

Meanwhile, the Speakeasy, also in Syntagma, is hidden underground, like the secret bars of the prohibition era. It's in the style of the 1930s, and there are lots of delicious cocktails, jazz and swing.
