Austrians shocked Canadians

The Canadian national team almost went down in the history of world ice hockey championships as the team that lost a 6-1 victory. It happened in the third round of the 2024 World Championship, which is currently taking place at Czech stadiums, in the North Americans' match against Austria, where the Europeans recovered from a five-goal deficit.

The Canadians, who are the reigning World Cup winners and the main favorites of this year's tournament, completely controlled the game in the first two periods. Having fired 35 shots at the opponents' goal, they sent the puck into the net six times, conceding one goal in return.

In the third 20 minutes, the North Americans came out clearly relaxed. The Austrians took advantage of this and shocked their opponent by equalizing. It's noteworthy that Canada conceded all of its goals while playing with a full squad. Their opponents scored the sixth goal with one more field player, having removed the goalkeeper.

The game sensationally went to overtime. The tournament favorites quickly recovered and pulled out a victory just 15 seconds after the start of the extra time. Thus, Austria won the first point of the tournament. The Canadians and the Swiss share first place in Group A.
