Canada tested a four-day working week: companies have come to an important conclusion

The transition to a four-day working week is being tested more and more actively

Canada has completed a large experiment to introduce a four-day week. The testing lasted for a year and showed promising results. Employers not only did not notice a drop in labor productivity, but also recorded its growth, and employees became much healthier and happier. Most decided to keep the four-day work week even after the experiment ended.

This is stated in the report of the University of York on the experiment, writes Now Toronto. The annual study involved 30 companies and 3.5 thousand employees. There were two options for organizing a four-day working week:

  • employees perform the same amount of work in 32 working hours per week instead of 40 hours;
  • 40 working hours are distributed over 4 days of the week instead of 5.

In both scenarios, the results were impressive. As for the employers' conclusions:

  • 90% of managers said that labor productivity in the company remained at the same level or even increased as a result of the new schedule;
  • 96% noted that it has become much easier for them to attract and retain talented employees due to a more progressive schedule;
  • 93% of respondents said they plan to continue using the four-day work week for a long time.

Moreover, 96% of employees are happier. The four-day workweek has also had a significant impact on people's health, significantly improving it.

"Research shows that shorter and compressed work schedules often increase productivity and economic returns, improve health, strengthen equity initiatives, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions," the report says.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, other countries are also experimenting with a four-day working week. In particular:

  • in Spain, employees reported a noticeable reduction in stress levels, and it turned out that the shortened working week has a positive impact on the environment;
  • after a study in the UK, none of the 33 participating companies wanted to return to the traditional five-day workweek.
