German biathlete Janina Hettich-Walz sensationally became the vice-champion of the 2024 World Championships. The 27-year-old native of Schiltach won silver in the individual race.

Before the race, none of the experts predicted a medal for Hettich-Walz, as the biathlete had never finished higher than fifth place at the World Cup before.

Janina was able to put the predictors to shame by organizing four zeros in the shooting and showing great speed in the run. Only 20 seconds separated her from the first place.

Ukraine was represented by four athletes in this discipline. The best result was shown by Khrystyna Dmytrenko, who finished in 8th place with perfect shooting. The rest of the Ukrainians finished outside the top 20.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, world biathlon champion Dmytro Pidruchnyi will miss the individual race at the 2024 World Championships, which are currently taking place in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic.

The captain of the Ukrainian national team will be preparing to start in the single mixed relay (February 15) and the classic relay (February 17). Pidruchnyi also retains his chances of qualifying for the mass start, which closes the program of the World Cup on February 18.
