Apple surpasses Samsung in smartphone shipments for the first time in ages

This is the lowest volume for a year in the last decade, mainly due to macroeconomic problems and an increase in inventory at the beginning of the year. However, the growth in the second half of the year cemented the expected recovery for 2024.

"While we saw strong sales growth in the second half of 2023 for low-cost Android devices such as Transsion and Xiaomi, driven by popularity in emerging markets, Apple was clearly the big winner," said Nabila Popal, research director, IDC Worldwide Tracker.

Apple managed to take the lead in 2023 despite competition from Huawei in China, its largest market.

Analysts say that Apple's continued success and resilience is largely due to the trend towards more premium devices, which now account for more than 20% of the market. This is facilitated by "aggressive exchange offers and interest-free financing plans".

"Apple has certainly played a role in Samsung's drop in rankings, but the overall Android space is diversifying within itself. Huawei is back and expanding rapidly in China as brands like OnePlus, Honor, Google, and others are launching very competitive devices in the lower high-end price range. In general, the smartphone market is approaching very interesting times," the report says.
