Ancient burial with artifacts from the times of Kyivan Rus found in the center of Chernihiv

An ancient burial site with artifacts from the times of Kyivan Rus has been discovered in the center of Chernihiv. This research began in 2008 and continued in 2021 and September 2024.

According to the scientists, this burial ground functioned for about 200 years and was first a burial mound and then a Christian burial ground. In one of the burials, a heraldic pendant was found, which depicts two trident on both sides, Cheline writes.

The area where the burials were found was planned to be used for the construction of a multi-story building. All archaeological objects and materials have been removed and the site is now an empty lot for construction work.

During the research near the burials, fragments of eleventh- and twelfth-century ceramics were discovered, as well as jewelry, an ancient Russian axe-glue, a knife, and other items confirming the antiquity of this burial.

"Kurgan mounds were visible at the end of the eighteenth century. They are marked on the plans of Chernihiv," said Vitalii Zhyhola, a junior researcher at the Old Russian Department of Archeology at the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, during a museum meeting at the V. Tarnovskyi Chernihiv Regional History Museum. He also added that this site is interesting because at first there were mound burials there, and then they began to make ground burials around it.

According to Vitalii Zhyhola, it is most likely that one of the tridents may belong to Mstyslav, who was the founder of the Chernihiv principality. According to historians' research, at that time this territory was already an outskirt of the city.
