An underrated city in the heart of Europe: where to go if you love hiking
When on vacation, the last thing we want is to use overcrowded public transportation, especially when we're trying to figure out the route system in a city we don't know. That's why the ideal choice for a city vacation is where it is convenient and interesting to wander on foot.
The Express magazine told us about one of the best walking cities in Europe. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 and has a rich culture and fascinating history. We are talking about the old town of Luxembourg, the capital of the country of the same name, which is lost between Belgium, France and Germany.
A leisurely stroll through the ancient streets is sure to lead you to some impressive sights, such as Chemin de la Corniche, proclaimed "the most beautiful balcony in Europe," the romantic Grund district, or Bock Casemates that shed light on Luxembourg's past as a well-protected fortress.
Be sure to visit the Grand Ducal Palace in the capital. Behind its caramel-colored facade and elegant towers are luxurious and sophisticated interiors. And if you really want to immerse yourself in the history of the city of Luxembourg, you should go to the Dräi Eechelen Museum. It is located inside a restored fort where you can explore underground tunnels and mines. Don't spare your time and money on a tour - you can see more than 600 antiques and hear interesting stories about them. And the Museum of Modern Art Grand-Duc Jean is located right next door, where interesting exhibitions of fashion artists are held.
According to the Lonely Planet guide, fall is one of the best times to visit Luxembourg. As the city is immersed in greenery, it is flooded with bright colors of foliage. Try to spare a little more than two days for your trip. Although the city is quite small, you will have plenty to see there.
And, of course, there will be something to taste too. The local cuisine combines the traditions of French and German cooking. You can taste dishes like Judd mat Gaardebounen, which is prepared with smoked pork neck, potatoes and beans - a perfect choice for the slightly cooler fall weather. Luxembourg also has a long history of brewing, which dates back to 1300, so be sure to try some of the local beers during your visit.
