An IKEA bag with human bones was found in Germany: The "victim" was 1500 years old

In Germany, archaeologists received 1500-year-old human bones. However, the delivery was made not in special boxes, but in an IKEA bag.

According to the administration, the shopping bag with the findings was handed over to the city archaeology of Fulda. According to preliminary data, the remains belong to an ancient tribe, writes Hessenschau.

Strange packaging

Archaeologist Milena Wingenfeld said that the blue and yellow IKEA bag was handed over to her by a volunteer from the Fulda District Archaeology. He inherited the human remains, which were wrapped in a crumpled newspaper from the 1960s, from a deceased friend who was a doctor.

Before he died, the doctor said that when he was young, in the 1960s, he helped with an archaeological dig at a cemetery in Göttingen in Lower Saxony. In gratitude for his work, he was allowed to choose one of the skeletons he found, Milena said.

"He was simply allowed to take the skeleton with him. Today it sounds very strange to us. However, we can say that the doctor was trained in this field because he had previously sorted the skeleton parts," Wingenfeld said.

Examination of the remains

According to Milena Wingenfeld, the anatomical group in the bag included two femurs, parts of a jaw, two kneecaps, pieces of a skull, arm bones and a spine with ribs. "It seems to be the skeleton of one person," the archaeologist suggested.

Based on current knowledge, it is impossible to say how old a person was or what gender they were, the researcher says. There are no graves that could help with dating. Next week, a radiologist will examine the bones and clarify these issues.

Interestingly, the archaeologist found a scientific publication about a cemetery near Göttingen among the bones.

Wingenfeld's colleagues from the Göttingen District Archaeology Department confirmed that the skeleton from Fulda actually belongs to Lower Saxony. Therefore, the remains may belong to a person who was buried during the Germanic tribes' time - about 1500 years ago.

According to the researchers, the found remains can complete the picture that archaeologists have of the funeral rites and living conditions of people living at that time.
