An early harvest: how to sow sorrel in the fall

Sorrel is a tasty and healthy crop that will be an ideal addition to dishes. Sorrel is usually associated with the first spring greens, so you need to sow the plant in time in the fall.

OBOZ.UA tells you how to plant sorrel for the winter. To get an early harvest, you need to choose the optimal planting time: the plant should not germinate during the period of temporary warming - the so-called Indian summer.

When and how to sow sorrel

The best time to plant is late October or even early to mid-November. It all depends on the weather conditions.

You can sow the seeds in small holes or use the free sowing procedure. The planting material should be buried to a depth of no more than 2 cm, and the optimal distance between the rows should be 30 cm.

Experienced gardeners advise sowing more seeds, because winter conditions will definitely reduce the amount of harvest. In the spring, when the sprouts appear, they should be thinned out, leaving a distance of 5 cm. During the second thinning, you can even increase the distance to 15 cm. This is necessary to ensure that air circulates sufficiently between the leaves. Lack of circulation can lead to fungal spores and rot.

Where to sow sorrel

Sorrel is a perennial plant, so you need to choose the site carefully. It grows well in partial shade, so you can sow it under trees or fences. Only half a day in the sun is enough for the sorrel to grow well. Please also note that when planting for the winter, you should choose a place where snow melts faster.

It is also important to prepare the soil. If the autumn rainy season has already begun and the bed is too wet, you need to add drainage.

Fertilizers will come in handy - 35 g of superphosphate, 25 g of potassium chloride, and 5-7 kg of compost or manure will be needed per 1 square meter of soil. Of course, the soil should be well dug up, and before planting it will be useful to add urea to it.
