Air quality is one of the worst in the world: the popular tourist destination is known for toxic smog
Some of the most interesting cities in the world for tourists are megacities. This makes their culture richer, but it also brings with it related problems, such as poor environmental conditions.
This is exactly what the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, has faced, according to the Express. Despite the fact that the city can offer its guests incredible food, vibrant nightlife, and rich culture, it is also among the most polluted. Hanoi's problems are smog and garbage burning. All this makes the air quality in the city one of the worst in the world.
Air pollution levels are measured by PM2.5, which are microscopic particulate matter floating in the air, with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less. These particles are so small that they can be absorbed into the bloodstream when inhaled, and this poses a danger to human health.
According to the Air Quality Index, which is determined by the number of such particles, Hanoi's PM2.5 concentration is 24.3 times higher than the World Health Organization's safe level. This means that the air quality here is at a dangerously low level.
The reason for this is that Hanoi is a center of industrial production. In addition, the Vietnamese capital has very heavy traffic. Both contribute to high levels of smog.
Residents and visitors of the city are urged to wear masks on the street and close windows in their homes to prevent poor-quality air from getting inside. It is also recommended to turn on the indoor air purifier and avoid outdoor sports.
However, even such a problem as bad air does not stop tourists from visiting Hanoi. According to some reports, up to 160,00 tourists visited the city last year. This is 16% more than a year earlier.
At the same time, about 28,400 guests were foreigners, and the increase was 67%. The number of domestic tourists also increased. About 132,000 Vietnamese visited the city, 10% more than in the previous year. The total revenue from tourism amounted to about $24.7 million, which is +26% more.
And it is not difficult to understand why Hanoi is so popular. Founded 1000 years ago, the Vietnamese metropolis offers everything from excellent shopping to museums and beaches. The picturesque Ha Long Bay is a short drive from this lively city. It has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This stunning bay has white sandy beaches, magnificent caves, and rock formations.
Hanoi's old quarter attracts visitors with its cafes, restaurants, and hundreds of market stalls. Each street here has its own peculiarities. For example, Han Gai Street is a popular place for those who want to buy unique clothes made of silk. And on Lan Ong Street you can buy traditional herbal medicines.
