About 500 geese flood Prykarpattia water body. Unique video

A unique event was recorded at Burshtyn Water Reservoir in the Carpathian region of Ukraine. Many different birds, including about 500 geese, flooded the reservoir to rest and replenish their energy on their way to nesting sites.

According to ecologists, the reservoir, which is part of the Halych National Nature Park, is one of the largest non-freezing reservoirs in western Ukraine. Every year, it hospitably receives a huge number of birds during migrations, environmentalists wrote on the Facebook page of the park.

During the survey, scientists found a large flock (about five hundred) of wild geese. The researchers note that now is the most active phase of wild geese migration. "It is possible that some of the greylag geese from this flock will stay here to nest, and some, along with the greater white-fronted goose, will migrate further east," the biologists suggested in their post.

According to ornithologists, greylag geese that breed in Iceland spend the winter in the British Isles, while those from Central Europe spend the winter in Spain and North Africa. However, some geese migrate to the Balkans, Turkey and Iraq.

"They nest almost all over Ukraine, mainly in river floodplains and lakes with reed beds. Greylag geese started nesting in Halych National Nature Park in 2015-2016," the researchers noted.

It is interesting that greylag geese make nests very quickly - they nest in March, and in April there is already a brood. The chicks grow up rapidly, so the number of these birds is growing fast too, scientists say.
