A Ukrainian polar explorer filmed a unique iceberg in the Antarctic with a drone. The walruses can organize a real spa on the ice floe, because a natural pool has formed there.

Oleksandr Matsibura, the system administrator of the 29th scientific expedition to the Ukrainian Antarctic station Akademik Vernadsky, wrote on his Facebook page that there is a whole pool of fresh water inside the ice mountain. This is an alarming signal, scientists say.

Scientists have proven that the rate of glacial melting in the Antarctic is unfortunately increasing. This means that more fresh water is entering the Southern Ocean.

Since fresh water differs from salt water in density, the increase in its amount in the ocean can even affect currents, experts say.

As part of the EU Horizon project OCEAN:ICE, Ukrainian scientists will study how currents are changing in the part of the Southern Ocean where Vernadsky is located. The practical part of the study will start early next year during a seasonal expedition, the polar explorers emphasize.
