Many people dream of visiting the most popular tourist destinations, but they are stopped by high prices, crowds, etc. However, this does not mean that they miss the opportunity to enjoy the unique atmosphere of some places.

There are small and charming cities on the world map that are not always on the tourist routes but are striking in their similarity to the most famous regions. Express told us about one of them.

Aveiro, a small town in Portugal that often goes unnoticed by tourists, has been nicknamed the "Portuguese Venice". This city is ideal for those who want to enjoy the beauty of canals and picturesque landscapes without the crowds and high prices typical of the Italian counterpart.

Aveiro is located on the Atlantic coast. The city is crossed by three main canals that create an unforgettable atmosphere. Visitors will be especially impressed by the colorful boats known as moliceiros. They look like Venetian gondolas and pass through the city center, offering tourists incredible views.

However, Aveiro offers other entertainment as well. The city is known for its salt spas, as well as surfing lessons on the Portuguese coast. For gourmets, this place will also be a discovery: the local cuisine offers unique dishes such as the Ovos Molés dessert and the eel stew known as Caldeirada de Enguias.

With a size of 197 square kilometers, Aveiro is half the size of Venice, and one of the city's main advantages is its rich history. It is famous for its maritime heritage and fishing industry and is also known for its ceramic craftsmanship, which dates back to the Roman period. This and its independence from tourism has allowed the region to remain so distinctive and peaceful.

Among the city's architectural gems are Art Nouveau buildings, the Art Nouveau Museum, and ancient monuments such as the 15th-century Cathedral Of Aveiro and the Church of Jesus. In addition, not far from the city are the beautiful beaches of Costa Nova and Barra, which are easily accessible by bus.
