While browsing Google Maps in Antarctica, southeast of the Japanese station Showa, a mysterious "doorway" was spotted. After the publication of the interesting photo, many explanations of the "giant door" appeared on the network from users.

However, scientists do not see anything mystical in this photo. The explanation is quite commonplace for Antarctica, as the hole in the snow is an iceberg, DailyMail writes.

When the "doorway" was published online with the coordinates on Google Maps 69°00'50 "S 39°36'22 "E, there were many explanations for the mysterious phenomenon. Some wrote that "this is the Bigfoot vacation home," others claimed that the photo was of a Star Trek shuttle, and someone else was sure that it was an "alien artifact," IflScience writes. There were also less mundane ideas: "It's just a Boeing door that flew in here."

And one user even suggested that it could be "a large seed storage facility, like the one in Svalbard, Norway."

While people were joking, Bethan Davies, a professor of glaciology at Newcastle University, looked at the coordinates on Google Earth, which allowed her to see historical images of the site.

"This facility is located in the sea ice zone in East Antarctica, not far from the coast. There are several islands there, and there is not much water. This is an iceberg that landed on the ground and is now stuck and melting in place. You can see many other icebergs in the area," explained Bethan Davies, explaining the mysterious photo.

The co-director of the Grantham Institute, Professor Martin Siegert, agreed with his colleague, Professor Davies. "It's just the flow of ice around a solid subglacial barrier, which is also affected by melting and re-freezing, as well as by the flowing wind," Martin confirmed.
