The tragedy occurred in a match of the British League (EIHL)

In England, 29-year-old Nottingham Panthers hockey player Adam Johnson died after a Sheffield ice hockey player's skate blade slashed his throat. The horrific tragedy occurred in front of 8000 fans at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield of the EIHL.

With 6 minutes left in the 2nd period, Johnson and his partner ran on a counterattack. Adam tried to change the trajectory abruptly, and the opponent who attacked Johnson's partner did not have time to follow the maneuver and hit him in the neck with his skate as he fell.

The referees and all the hockey players immediately started calling for medics. Johnson was able to get to the bench on his own, where an ambulance was immediately called. The match was stopped and the spectators were asked to leave the stands.

He was taken to the hospital, but they couldn't save him. After a while, Johnson died of blood loss.

The scary moment was broadcast on TV and later posted on social media. Warning: Video is 18+. Link.

Johnson's mother Kari said: "I lost half my heart tonight."

The club published an obituary in which it expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

"Everyone at the team, including players, staff, management and owners, are heartbroken to hear of Adam's passing. Our thoughts also go out to the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who attended or watched the game and were devastated by today's news," the statement reads.

Adam Johnson joined the Panthers in the 2023-2024 season. Prior to that, he played in four of the world's top leagues, including 13 games for the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins.

The forward was born in Hibbing, Minnesota, and began his professional career with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the 2017/18 season in the American Hockey League (AHL), scoring 31 points in the regular season.

He spent a total of three years with the Pennsylvania team, scoring 139 points in the league and playoffs.

His successful play led to a trade to Pittsburgh, where he scored four points in 13 games over two years and scored the Penguins' third goal in a 7-4 win over the Minnesota Wild in October 2019.

In the 2020/21 season, he played in the VHL, Sweden's top tier, scoring 12 points before returning to the AHL. In 2023, he moved to Nottingham, playing 7 games in the EIHL, scoring 4 goals and 3 assists.
