The Mediterranean coast of Turkey is a combination of green mountains, high cliffs, and clear sea. Popular resort towns are usually crowded with tourists until late fall. However, experienced travelers know the forgotten and hidden places that are the real gems of the Mediterranean.

Mugla is a city and district in southwestern Turkey. CNN told why it is worth visiting this region.

Mugla has all the charms that make Turkey such a popular destination: beautiful scenery, ample opportunities for rest and relaxation, clean sea, great beaches, and plenty of entertainment. The nearest airport is Bodrum International Airport.

The best place to start is the sunny seaside town of Göcek, located between Fethiye and Dalyan. Here you can enjoy art. The famous Dilari Akay Gallery is set in a luxurious garden. Incredible sculptures and outdoor recreation will be an ideal option for leisure during hot daytime hours, when it is better not to be on the beaches.

Dalaman and Fethiye bays are the meeting point of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. This is one of the most special parts of the Mediterranean. It is worth going on a yacht tour to enjoy the clear sea, fresh breezes and admire the beauty of the coast.

For the most demanding tourists, a unique route from Fethiye to Antalya along the coastline will be interesting. This place was once known as Lycia, and now it is part of southern Turkey. The Lycians have lived here for thousands of years under the Persians, Alexander the Great, and the Romans.

Along the way, you should stop in colorful coastal towns. Be prepared to plunge into the era of the ancient world - there is everything from Roman roads to ancient paths trodden by mules.

Moving high into the mountains, the Clowe route offers incredible views of the sea and high hills. This is truly one of the best long-distance hiking routes in the world - a combination of history and modernity.

It is worth seeing the stunning ruins of ancient Kaunos, where the tombs of former kings are built into the high cliffs opposite Dalyan. It was once an important port. The ruins are located about eight kilometers from the sea and date back to the 9th century.

Mugla is also famous for paragliding. People come from all over the world to Mount Babadag to take to the air and see the beauty of the area from above. At an altitude of 1700 meters there is a special launch pad.
