A city on the slopes of the Dnipro: the web shows what Kyiv looked like in 1965. Archival video

Newsreels are one of the ways to look deep into the history of Kyiv and see it in a completely different light. For example, in 1965, chroniclers drove around the capital of Ukraine by car, capturing its beauty and rhythm of life.

The recording was published on the Telegram channel of the Kyiv Living History community. You can see what our city was like almost 60 years ago.

The video shows the center of Kyiv as it used to look like the church on Askold's Grave, chestnut trees on Khreshchatyk, Halytska Square, the right bank of the capital from the side of the Paton Bridge, and other locations.

In the 1960s, the embankment near Poshtova Square and the Dnipro cliffs in Kyiv looked a bit different. And the beaches on Trukhaniv Island were much larger.

From 1878 until 1944, the City Duma building was located on the site of the current Independence Square in Kyiv. The majestic building resembled a bent horseshoe in its shape, and its roof spire was crowned with a statue of the city's patron saint, the Archangel Michael.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, a very unusual grave of a local resident who died in 1918 has been preserved in Kyiv's Zvirynetske cemetery. The World War I-era grave has a cross in the form of connected rails, the sides of which are decorated with German grenade casings.
