A film about the Russian imperialist and Ukrainophobe Eduard Limonov will be shown in Cannes

Russian filmmaker Kirill Serebrennikov, who is allegedly considered an oppositionist, is going to the Cannes Film Festival again. There, he will present a biographical film about the famous Russian imperialist, odious writer and politician Eduard Limonov, who became persona non grata in Ukraine during the presidency of Leonid Kuchma due to his anti-Ukrainian statements.

And although the festival organizers continue to claim that they are condemning the Russian aggression, Serebrennikov will be presenting his film at this international platform for the second time since the full-scale war began-he is, after all, an "oppositionist." And this time, his film will also tell the story of one of Russia's most famous Ukrainophobes. The program of the Cannes Film Festival was published by Variety.

Thus, Serebrennikov's film is titled "Limonov. The Ballad". This is the first international English-language film in which the notorious Soviet writer and politician is played by the British Ben Whishaw. The biopic is based on the book by Emmanuel Carrera.

They shot the movie in Russia. They spent 10.5 million dollars on its production. This is the most expensive film in Serebrennikov's arsenal.

Who is Eduard Limonov? To all of the above, we can also add that Limonov was a member of the "opposition" movement Other Russia. He is known for his Ukrainophobic, chauvinistic and xenophobic statements. And the most absurd thing in all of this is that Limonov is a Ukrainian by birth.

He had a negative attitude towards Ukraine's independence. In 1999, according to a resolution of the Security Service of Ukraine, he was declared persona non grata in connection with calls for the violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine. In particular, he called for a review of the status of Sevastopol and its transfer to Russia, and in 2018, the writer called for the division of Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

Here is one of his statements: "I would take into Russia those regions that will surely take root in Russia: Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Odesa, and maybe I would think about whether or not to take Dnipropetrovs'k. The point is that we need to hurry and take everything we can before Ukraine joins NATO. And Ukraine will definitely join NATO. After joining, in order to reunite the Ukrainian regions with Russia, we will have to fight with NATO specifically. Therefore, we need to hurry now."

Limonov died on March 17, 2020.

As a reminder, in 2022, Serebrennikov presented his film The Wife of Tchaikovsky at the Cannes Film Festival.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Putinists recently announced that the propaganda film "Brother 3" would be shown at this year's Marché du Film, which will be held in Cannes simultaneously with the Cannes Film Festival. The main role in the film is played by rapper Ptaha, who has been openly supporting Russia's occupation of Ukrainian territories since 2014. However, representatives of the film market reacted to this statement and revealed that the Russians lied.
