Guide Leilson de Souza was killed by lightning on top of a cliff in Brazil

An experienced guide, Leilson de Souza, was taking his group of tourists on a hiking tour in Tijuca National Park in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Together they decided to climb to the top of a cliff, when 36-year-old Souza was struck by lightning and died before the arrival of paramedics.

Before climbing the cliff, Leylson warned the tourists that it might start to rain, but they would see the sun at the top. The travelers agreed, but no one could have imagined that their hike would end in tragedy. The details were shared by 26-year-old Carla Araujo, one of the group members who accidentally captured the last seconds of the guide's life on camera, reports the Daily Mail.

In the published footage, we can see Souza from the back as he walks on top of a large stone with the appropriate hiking equipment. Then Carla turned the camera on herself, and meanwhile, a loud sound characteristic of a lightning strike was heard in the background. The girl was frightened and screamed.

Araujo told the Brazilian publication G1 that the guide warned them about the weather, saying it would start to rain in the afternoon. However, the tourists still had an hour to complete their hike.

"In the middle of our journey, it started to rain. The guide asked if we wanted to continue, and we all decided yes. He said there was a chance to go to the top and look at the sun," the tourist commented.

After the guide with more than 10 years of experience fell from a lightning strike, paramedics were urgently called for help. However, when they arrived, they could only pronounce the victim dead.

The tourist noted that everyone present was very scared. No one knew what to do and whether to expect repeated lightning strikes. Fortunately, the travelers were accompanied by the deceased's brother, who is also fond of hiking and is studying to become a guide.

He said that Leylson's death was a big blow to the whole family. No one could believe the tragic news.

"We could never imagine this. We imagine that we will die one way or another, go to the next world, but from lightning - it's hard. He was a wonderful person, he did everything for everyone, he was a guy who always wanted to bring special people, elderly people, everyone to the trail. His business was mountaineering, it was nature," said the brother of the victim of the natural disaster.

Earlier, OBOZ.UA reported that lightning also killed a 34-year-old mother of two on a beach in Colombia. The terrible moment was caught on video.
