In recent years, Ukrainian Christmas celebrations have become increasingly popular. The richness of Christmas traditions not only attracts ordinary citizens, but also intrigues filmmakers.

In the history of Ukrainian cinema, so many holiday movies have appeared that you can enjoy a whole Christmas marathon out of them. OBOZ.UA offers a selection of Ukrainian films that will entertain you during the holidays.

Infernal Guidon, or Cossack Christmas

The Christmas fairy tale combines elements of Ukrainian folklore and the heroic history of the Cossacks. In the story, the Devil makes a bet with St. Peter that he can imprison the bravest of the Cossacks, Semen, in hell and keep him there until Christmas. The cunning plan of the Devil is that in this way he will be able to destroy the entire Cossack family. However, the brave Semen proves to be a worthy opponent and he tries to destroy the insidious plan and prevent the brave warriors from leaving their native land without protection.

Kredens

On the eve of Christmas, the protagonist of the film Orest is sinking deeper and deeper into his problems, and they haunt him both at home and at work. Festive Lviv shines with warm lights only outside, but in the yards and houses everything is not so festive. Will Orest find the Christmas light that we all crave during the holidays? The director Valentyn Vasianovych does not promise a definite answer.

Evenings on a Farm near Dykanka

The 1961 film is an adaptation of a story by Nikolai Gogol. According to the story, blacksmith Vakula decides to win the heart of the impregnable beauty Oksana for the holidays. But she agrees to open up to him only in exchange for a special gift - the Empress's red slippers. It's not just anyone who decides to help Vakula, but the cunning Devil. Will the main character be able to save his soul and win Oksana's love?

December tale or S. Mykolay's Adventures

During a trip to the winter Carpathians, brother and sister Artem and Polya stay in an unfamiliar house without parental supervision. And they would have easily coped with the task of waiting for their dad and mom, if the local bandits hadn't been interested in this house. Their leader, nicknamed Kaban (Boar), introduces himself to the children as St. Nicholas. But the kids are not easily fooled, and they start a confrontation with the terrible guest. Vasyl Virastiuk plays the lead role.

My Grandpa is Santa

In this festive comedy, the authors decided to show the dreams of children whose fathers are now defending Ukraine. In the story, 9-year-old Maksym learns that his grandfather is a real Santa Claus. Thus, he goes to Kyiv to meet him under the main Christmas tree and ask him to bring his father, who is on a secret mission, home for the holidays. Of course, the boy will have some unusual adventures on the way. And also new friends and real miracles.

Carol of the Bells

The poignant drama tells the story of three families - Ukrainian, Polish and Jewish - who live under one roof. One day, they find themselves under occupation on the very battlefield of two empires - the Nazi Third Reich and the repressive USSR. While the Germans kill some, the Soviets destroy the culture and identity of others. And only the childhood dream of a Ukrainian girl, Yaroslava, to unite everyone through the song Shchedryk (Carol of the Bells) gives hope.

Pamfir

The poignant drama tells the story of Leonid, nicknamed Pamfir. He and his family live in the Carpathians near the Romanian border. He used to smuggle goods for a living, but now his criminal business is a thing of the past - Leonid works abroad, earning an honest living for his family. On the eve of the Malanka holiday, he returns home to take part in the traditional festivities, but insurmountable circumstances force him to briefly return to his dark past. And this will have its consequences.
