5 plants that need pruning in August: it will promote future growth
August is an active time for gardeners. Although the height of the growing season is almost over, there are still some plants that need pruning in August for better flowering.
Pruning is necessary to maintain health and aesthetics, as removing dead, diseased, or overly sprawling branches can encourage healthy growth, improve air circulation, and increase flowering or fruiting potential. Experts told which plants should be pruned in the last month of summer.
Wisteria
Wisteria, with its stunning cascades of fragrant flowers, is a great plant for garden display. However, the plant can quickly become unruly if not pruned promptly.
To keep the wisteria in good shape, expert Nigel Lawton recommends cutting long shoots to about five to six leaves from the main stem. Make sure you don't cut too close to the main stem to avoid damage. The procedure helps to control the size of the plant and stimulates the development of flower buds for the next season. Wisteria should be tied to a wall or garden structure with wires or trellis.
Lavender
Lavender is an unpretentious plant. It does not require careful maintenance and has many advantages. Its rich aroma attracts butterflies and other pollinators. Pruning preserves the shape of the plant and promotes the growth of more flowers.
The expert recommends cutting off the faded flower stems and removing a few cm of the current year's growth after flowering. When and how to prune lavender also depends on the variety you are growing.
Roses
Roses can be pruned in August to encourage new blooms in the fall. Pruning roses reduces the risk of disease. Removing dead or diseased branches improves air circulation and reduces the risk of pests while revitalizing the plant.
Fruit trees
August is also a good time to prune fruit trees, as it will promote fruit formation. So if you are growing apple, pear, cherry, or plum trees, an August pruning will benefit them.
Lawton recommends cutting back the current year's growth to about three leaves above the basal cluster.
"Make sure the cuts are made just above a bud to promote healthy new growth," the expert explained. This helps control the size of the tree and improves the quality of the fruit.
Although fruit trees can be pruned in August, the main pruning should be done during the dormant period from December to mid-February.
Hydrangeas
The best time to prune hydrangeas can vary depending on the variety. However, macrophylla hydrangeas or large-leaved species can be pruned in late summer.
Lawton suggests leaving the wilted flowers intact to provide frost protection in winter.
"Removing one or two of the oldest stems each year will encourage new growth from the base and improve flower growth," the expert emphasized.
Careful pruning promotes intensive growth and guarantees good flowering next year.
