5 documentaries about the Revolution of Dignity that everyone should watch

Everyone should watch these films about the Revolution of Dignity

It is important to remember our history despite the time that has passed since those events. Ten years ago, the Revolution of Dignity took place on Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv, which claimed the lives of more than a hundred concerned citizens, whose memory was captured in documentaries by Ukrainian filmmakers.

The #ShoTam media, together with the Cinema Squad, have created a selection of five most important films to watch to recall the events of the winter of 2014, thanks to which the Maidan and the whole of Ukraine "survived." These films convey the atmosphere of the events not only through the stories of witnesses and activists, but also help us understand the meaning of the struggle and the importance of freedom in our country.

"Winter on Fire"

The film chronicles the events of the winter of 2013-2014, demonstrating the "civil rights movement". It was started by students, who were later joined by people from all over Ukraine and turned a peaceful action into a full-fledged revolution.

The film won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and was nominated for two awards: Golden Reel Award and Oscar in 2016.

"Everything is burning"

"The film shows the confrontation of the Revolution of Dignity from the epicenter of the conflict and follows how it changes its character from peaceful protest to bloody clashes," the media described the film.

The film was recognized as the winner of the DOK Leipzig Film Festival as the best Eastern European documentary in 2014.

"Euromaidan. Rough cut"

"From pots on the head to batons and bulletproof vests. From the euphoria of victory to the mourning of the Heavenly Hundred. The revolution as an explosion of awakened dignity, as the euphoria of freedom, as the pain of realizing the price, as the birth of the modern history of Ukraine," reads the description of the film.

"Turning Point: The War for Democracy in Ukraine"

This film depicts the events of not only the Revolution of Dignity, but also the annexation of Crimea and the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014. "During the creation of the film, testimonies of 86 participants of the Revolution of Dignity and participants of the Russian-Ukrainian war were recorded, and more than 600 minutes of film material was shot," the source said.

The film won the best film at the EtCultura Film Festival in 2016 and was shortlisted for the 2018 Oscars in the best documentary category.

"Stronger than weapons"

This film explains the entire chronicle of the Revolution of Dignity from the attempt to seize the Presidential Administration on December 1, 2013, to the fight for Donetsk airport in the fall of 2014.

The film won the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine award for Best Documentary in 2014.
