The garage often becomes not only a shelter for the car, but also a kind of storage for a variety of things that have not found their place in the house. And while this is convenient, there are some things that should never be stored there.

Typically, garages are not climate controlled and run a high risk of mold, dirt, etc. The Martha Stewart publication has revealed that storing some things in such conditions can lead to negative consequences.

Some things need special storage conditions such as proper temperature, humidity, and pest protection. However, it is usually hard to create them in the neighborhood garages. Therefore, in order to avoid possible health risks and keep your belongings in proper condition, you should know what should absolutely not be left in the garage.

Electronics

Electronic devices require special storage conditions to avoid damage from moisture or temperature differences. Even when not in use, store electronics in a climate-controlled room, such as on the top shelf of an office closet or at a charging station.

Firewood

Storing firewood in your garage, especially if it's adjacent to your home, can become a hazard to your home. Wood can attract wood bugs and other pests that can easily enter your home over time. It is better to store firewood outdoors in a place that is protected from moisture.

Food

Food, particularly canned food, should not be stored in the garage, especially if it is not climate-controlled. Food can attract pests, and high temperatures will cause the stock to spoil.

Paints

Paint cans can quickly lose their properties if stored in the wrong place, such as at too high temperatures. It's best to keep them in a cool, dry area.

Propane

Propane is flammable, so it should be kept in a well-ventilated, open area as far away from your car and other things that could catch fire as possible. The ideal place to store propane cylinders is in a well-ventilated area that is protected from extreme temperatures.

Books

If you have extra books, don't store them in the garage. Moisture can cause mold to grow on the paper, and pests can damage the literature.

Paper products

Paper products, such as toilet paper or napkins, should also be stored in a dry, climate-controlled room. In a garage, they can fall victim to pests or moisture.

Photos

Photos and other memorabilia should not be stored in the garage where they can be damaged. It is better to keep them in a safe place that is protected from moisture and pests. It also doesn't hurt to digitize your memories so that you definitely don't lose them.

Art

Storing artwork in the garage can damage it due to temperature fluctuations, humidity, or even pests. Experts advise wrapping paintings in acid-free paper and storing them in archival boxes in a closet or under a bed.

Linens and bedding

Storing extra linens in the garage can cause them to deteriorate due to odors or moisture. It is better to keep it in a closet in a room where it will be protected from exhaust fumes, chemicals or fertilizers, garbage, mold, etc.

Wine

Wine is best stored in a place where temperature and humidity can be controlled. For this purpose, a cool, dark cellar or cellar is better suited.
