Women give 40% more money than men: what the scientific experiment "Dictator Game" showed
A group of psychologists and economists from the University of Jaume in Spain found evidence that women are more generous than men. During the analysis, they conducted experiments with volunteers who played the "Dictator Game."
Previous studies have shown that men and women are almost identical in terms of financial generosity. However, the team of experts noted that almost all such studies involved a small number of volunteers, and they involved 1161 people for greater objectivity, Phys.org writes.
The Dictator game is a type of ultimatum game developed by psychologists to determine whether people act only out of self-interest, experts say. Players are given a certain amount of money and asked whether they want to share some or all of it with another, anonymous player who is completely dependent on the generosity of the first.
For this new study, the researchers conducted the same experiment several times – in 2020, 2022, and 2023, with a total of 1161 male and female players participating. The researchers gave the first player 10 euros and then asked him how much he would like to share with the second player.
After calculating the results, the scientists were surprised to find that women gave 40% more money than men.
The researchers also asked each player to fill out a personal profile first. They found that people who were rated as more open and more tolerant were more likely to give more. They noted that women with stronger reasoning skills were more likely to give less than women with weaker ones.
The experts also recognized that generosity was measured in a limited game environment among people who did not know each other. Therefore, it is unknown whether such gender differences exist where people know those who can receive money or when others can observe to evaluate them.
