Winter Venice: what must-see sights you shouldn't miss

Albina PanchenkoNews
Winter vacation in Venice

The city on water is a popular tourist destination that causes a real stir in summer. Therefore, to avoid the crowds, the best time to travel is during the frosty months. After all, the absence of heat and a large number of travelers allows you to calmly explore the city, enjoying its architecture and art. To know what to see and where to go, read on.

Venice Carnival

The first mention of the festivities dates back to the XI century, and the holiday received its official status in 1296. At the time, the event was considered a place of permissiveness, when social boundaries were erased, and representatives of different segments of the population hid under masks.

After the fall of the Republic of Venice in 1797, the carnival fell into decline, and in 1979 it became one of the city's main tourist attractions.

Today, the grand event attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world.

For several weeks, Venice lives in a rhythm of celebration. Theatrical performances, concerts, masquerade balls, and contests for the best costume take place in the squares and streets.

By the way, it is worth taking care of booking accommodation in advance, as prices increase significantly during this period.

In 2025, the festival will run from February 22 to March 4.

St. Mark's Basilica

Located on the square of the same name.

In 829, the relics of the Apostle Mark, the patron saint of the city, were brought here. To store them, a small chapel was first built, which was later rebuilt into a majestic cathedral.

Today, the shrine is considered a model of the Byzantine style, combining elements of Western European architecture. The interior of the prayer hall is distinguished by a floor with colorful marble and walls covered with mosaics depicting biblical scenes and historical events.

We recommend paying attention to the Pala d'Oro, the main golden altar image with precious stones. It has 80 icons.

By the way, the main Christmas tree is placed next to the prayer room.

Bridge of Sighs

The attraction was built in the early seventeenth century by architect Antonio Contino. The structure was made in the Baroque style of white Istrian stone. It is famous for its small windows decorated with stone lattices.

By the way, the name of the bridge does not come from the sighs of lovers, but from the mournful sighs of prisoners escorted through a closed passage, who admired the views of Venice for the last time.

La Fenice Opera House

The theater was built in 1790-1792 by architect Gian Antonio Selva. Interesting fact: the building was named after the mythical Phoenix bird, as the institution has repeatedly risen from the ruins after fires.

In the XIX century, the premieres of operas by prominent Italian authors were held here, including of Gioacchino Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini, and Giuseppe Verdi.

In 1996, the theater burned down again. The arson was set by electrician Enrico Carella, who wanted to avoid a fine for delayed work.

The religious building was restored with the support of the state and reopened in 2003. President Carlo Ciampi attended the celebrations.

In winter, you can also enjoy New Year and Christmas concerts.

Grand Canal

One of the main transportation routes that runs through the city. The waterway begins near the train station and ends near the customs building.

Unique buildings and glorious palaces, such as Ca' d'Oro and Barbarigo, line the canal.

We recommend taking a ride on a vaporetto, the only public transportation in Venice. From the deck of the "river tram" you can see all the coastal attractions.

Burano

An island neighborhood 7 kilometers from the city. It will surprise everyone who wants to escape from the winter gray.

The neighborhood is famous for its bright, colorful houses. Red, yellow, blue, orange, and light green shades prevail here.

Since the 16th century, the center has specialized in the production of lace. Even a museum is dedicated to this craft.

Also, go to the Church of San Martino. It was built between 1706 and 1785. Tourists can see a series of paintings by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, in particular the work "The Crucifixion".

The church houses the relics of the martyr Barbara, the patron saint of embroiderers.

Stroll through narrow streets, snow-covered squares, and quiet canals. Go to winter Venice!
