Wi-Fi learned to be used to spy on people through walls
A team of scientists has developed a system that combines artificial intelligence and Wi-Fi to create a new method of "seeing" people through walls. Although the development was well-intentioned, it is already being speculated that this technology could have dire consequences in the future if it falls into the wrong hands.
According to the Daily Star, scientists were able to use Wi-Fi signal waves to locate a person behind a wall and also display a 3D version of that person on a computer screen.
This technology can turn reality into an episode of the dystopian series "Black Mirror", because it can be used not only for remote monitoring of the elderly, but any other surveillance of people, because most have Wi-Fi at home.
Jiaqi Geng, who led the study at Carnegie Mellon University, said that researchers have created a neural network that uses Wi-Fi signals to map ultraviolet radiation from a person.
Similar methods of tracking people without cameras have been attempted before, using cell phone signals and expensive equipment, but the new technology could be a breakthrough given the widespread use of Wi-Fi.
The researchers note that their method is also effective where conventional cameras are useless due to lack of light.
