On January 22, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Unity, a holiday that symbolizes the unity and indivisibility of Ukrainian lands. This date has been celebrated at the state level since 1999, and its historical roots go back to 1919, when the Act of Unification of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR) and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic (WUPR) was proclaimed on St. Sophia Square in Kyiv.

The Act of Unification became a defining event for the Ukrainian state, confirming Ukrainians' desire for unity. It refutes the Russian propaganda claim that Stalin united Ukrainian lands in 1939. In fact, the idea of unity existed long before the twentieth century and was key to the national liberation movement.

Why Unity Day is celebrated on January 22

Unity means not only territorial unity but also spiritual cohesion of Ukrainians, regardless of their nationality or region of residence. It is a principle that combines statehood, sovereignty, and independence, forming the basis of a democratic Ukraine.

In the context of the current Russian-Ukrainian war, the idea of unity is gaining even more importance. Today, more than ever, Ukrainians need to remain united to win and restore their territorial integrity. The slogan of this year's celebration was "There is strength in unity". Ukrainians recall the events of 1919 and pay tribute to those who fought and are fighting for the country's independence.

Unity remains a key goal of Ukrainians. It will be fully realized only when Ukraine regains all its territories. Therefore, January 22 is not only a day of historical remembrance, but also a reminder of the need to fight together for the future.
