Which radish varieties can be planted in the garden in September and what is their main feature
Radishes are usually associated with May and the first spring harvest. However, experienced gardeners emphasize that certain varieties can be planted even in September. And growing radishes in greenhouse conditions can significantly extend the period of fresh consumption.
This is a fairly unpretentious crop that does not require special conditions. But with improper care, the fruits begin to taste bitter, or instead of large root crops, only long tops grow. OBOZ.UA tells you what varieties of radish can be planted in the garden in September and what their main feature is
How to grow radishes
Radishes easily tolerate a drop in temperature, and the optimal temperature is 16-19 °C. An increase to more than 20 °C can negatively affect the growth and development of the fruit.
This is a very light-loving crop that should not be sown in the shade. Radish forms root crops in conditions of short daylight hours, so illumination in the evening or morning hours will not be useful.
Which soil is suitable
The soil should be fertilized with humus. It is important to avoid excessive nitrogen, so manure, compost, or organic matter are not suitable for greenhouse radishes. A small amount of peat can be added to dense or clay soil. Before planting, it is advisable to add potassium sulfate to the bed.
How to water radishes in a greenhouse
The soil in the greenhouse should be moistened periodically. Radish seedlings are advised to be watered daily from a watering can with a strainer, directly on the leaves. In the heat, you can even increase watering in the morning and in the evening, before sunset. To lower the temperature, you can also water the aisles.
What varieties are suitable for a greenhouse
Gardeners say that not all varieties of radish will grow and produce a good harvest in greenhouse conditions. You need to choose those that can tolerate a lack of lighting. Experts recommend the following varieties: Globus, Krasa, Aleks, Greenhouse Mushroom, Mossy (white), Mark, Ksenia, etc. Early varieties are also suitable: Donar, French breakfast, Zarya.
In August and September, you can sow autumn varieties that gardeners conditionally refer to the Asian group: autumn giant, soffit, Würzburg 59, ice icicle, basis. As a rule, they form larger root crops that do not fade or spoil longer. Autumn varieties are better suited for long-term storage.
