Where to have a budget vacation in Europe: the ideal capital is named
A budget vacation doesn't always mean a boring one with little choice of entertainment. One of the European capitals offers its guests wonderful cultural attractions, inexpensive and delicious food in restaurants, interesting nightlife, and all this for a reasonable price.
According to the Express, all this can be easily found in the Latvian capital Riga. And yet, it is still a location with a European level of service that is not well explored by tourists. Transport accessibility makes the city a convenient choice for those who like to travel without preparation.
Riga's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it is full of fabulous architecture in the romantic, Gothic, and Baroque styles. Experts advise to visit Riga Castle and the famous St. Peter's Church.
The cultural life of the Latvian capital is vibrant and diverse, with theaters, art galleries, and outdoor events. Tickets to the stunning Riga Opera House can cost as little as 10 euros. However, such prices do not apply on all days of the visit.
And when you want to take a break, choose a quiet spot in one of the city's 125 parks, gardens, and squares. If you like relaxing on the water, go boating in the local lakes and rivers.
Last year, Max Cekot Kitchen became the first restaurant in Latvia to receive a Michelin star. Housed in a former warehouse building constructed of beautiful red brick, the establishment is located on the outskirts of the city. In total, the Michelin guide includes 26 restaurants across the country – 19 of them are located in Riga.
Or if you're looking for a more informal option, visit Riga's large Central Market on the banks of the Daugava River. In addition to food, you can buy a lot of souvenirs here. And be sure to buy the city's trademark liqueur, Riga Balsam, which is made from black currants and herbs.
In winter, the city turns into a magical wonderland. Christmas markets, snow-covered streets, and for the most adventurous, the locals offer a special treat – swimming in the Baltic Sea. Although the air temperature in the winter months here drops below zero, immersion in its waves can be a very interesting experience.
