Beans are a fairly unpretentious crop, so it would seem that there shouldn't be any problems with harvesting them. However, a few common mistakes can make all your efforts go to waste. This crop grows well on light soils, and the harvesting and storage of different varieties may differ depending on the purpose of cultivation.

OBOZ.UA tells you when to harvest beans. Sugar and semi-sugar varieties, for example, can be harvested when the length of the fruit reaches 5-14 cm.

When to harvest beans

You can start harvesting beans when the leaves are already dry and the fruits are hard. Beans are usually harvested in September. You should start in the morning so that by the evening the picking sites have time to dry out and do not become a center for fungi and infections.

Bush beans should not be pulled up by the roots. They should be carefully cut off near the ground so that the roots with nodule bacteria remain in the soil. It is an ideal nitrogen fertilizer.

Bean harvesting begins in July and lasts until mid-autumn. Green bush and yellow wax varieties can be picked as soon as they are ripe – the more often the fruit is removed, the faster they grow. Climbing varieties can be picked 2 to 3 times per season.

Where to store beans

Beans should be thoroughly dried beforehand, for example, by spreading them in a thin layer on a sheet of newspaper and stirring them regularly.

Pour the hulled beans into three-liter jars and put the lids on tightly to prevent pests.

Beans will spoil if the temperature is too low, so you should choose the storage place carefully.

If the pests do start, it is advised to warm the beans in the oven, then pour them into cotton bags, add a little baking soda and tie them.
