When is the best time to go to the Maldives: tips for a first-class vacation
The Maldives is beautiful at any time of the year. Whether you're planning a honeymoon, a vacation with friends, or a solo trip, you're in for an unforgettable experience. If you want to escape from the cold weather in search of perfect weather and crystal clear water on the beaches, go from January to March. If you want to save money and avoid the crowds, the "low season" from April to August is a great choice.
Surfing is best done in summer, and autumn is the best time for diving. LonelyPlanet experts have published a travel guide with tips on vacationing in the Maldives. The only thing left to decide is which of the 1192 islands to choose.
January – March: hot months
If your priority is warm weather and sunny beaches, then the Maldives in January, February, or March will be a great choice. This is the period outside of the monsoon season, which means maximum sunshine hours. Humidity remains low, and the average air temperature is around 29°C.
It is worth noting that the rainy season ends at the end of November. That's when prices start to rise due to the increased demand for winter beach vacations, and they peak closer to Christmas.
These months are great for diving and snorkeling – the water is extremely clear and calm. The Raa Atoll, known for its spectacular coral reefs, is especially worth a visit.
April – August: budget period
The first rains start in April, but this period is still great for traveling to the Maldives. The main advantage is that it is one of the cheapest seasons. Even with the more frequent rainfall, you can enjoy 7-8 hours of sunshine every day.
The water will be cloudier due to the increased amount of plankton. However, the sea temperature remains ideal at 30°C.
This is a great season for budget travelers: resorts are less crowded and airfares and accommodation prices are significantly reduced. In addition, it is easier to book luxury rooms and enjoy a carefree vacation.
June – July: perfect conditions for surfing
If you like surfing, the best time to go is in June and July. That's when the waves reach their highest height, and many resorts have their own surf schools.
One of the best regions for this is the Laamu Atoll, where the famous Six Senses Laamu is located - one of the first resorts in the Maldives with a surf school. In general, the best places for surfing are the northern and central atolls.
July: Independence Day celebrations
On July 26, the Maldives celebrates Independence Day, and this is a great opportunity to join the festivities. The entire archipelago is filled with parades and parties.
Resorts organize special events for guests, so this is a great chance to get to know the local culture.
October – November: time for wildlife watching
These months are characterized by a higher probability of short-term showers, but in general, you can count on 6-8 hours of sunshine a day. The air temperature remains comfortable at around 27°C.
The main advantage of this period is the opportunity to observe sea giants. It is at this time that whale sharks and manta rays actively feed on plankton, which allows you to see them in all their glory.
One of the best places to do this is Raa Atoll. You should also go to Baa Atoll, which is a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
December: a festive atmosphere and a tropical Christmas
December is one of the most expensive months to travel to the Maldives, as it combines great opportunities for marine life observation with a magical holiday atmosphere.
Resorts in the Maldives turn into a real winter (or rather tropical) fairy tale: palm trees shine with festive lights, and Santa Claus arrives not on a sleigh but on a jet ski.
In December, the Maldives has about 7 hours of sunshine a day, a comfortable air temperature of 29°C, and slightly cooler water – about 26°C. This is the perfect temperature for a refreshing swim after a Christmas dinner under the starry sky.
