Experienced gardeners know that in October it's no use waiting for a vacation. There is a lot of work to be done before the frost and cold weather. In addition, mid-autumn is the time to harvest late vegetables and fruits. It is in October that certain varieties of cabbage, pumpkins, apples, pears, grapes, and quince ripen.

OBOZ.UA tells you what you need to do in the garden by the end of October. The to-do list includes planting winter crops and warming perennials.

Planting winter crops

In October, you should plant winter garlic. According to the lunar calendar, the most favorable days for gardening are October 21-22, 25, 26, 29, and 30. Starting in the middle of the month, you can sow carrots, spinach, radishes, celery, leeks, and parsley. Since a cold winter is ahead, it is better to sprinkle the seeds on top with a mixture of soil and humus.

Work in the garden

October is a favorable month for pruning trees. Active life processes in trunks and branches have already ended, so pruning will be easy. The main thing is that the cuts have time to heal before the frost. But it's better to prune raspberries, currants, gooseberries, and actinidia in September.

Cleaning the garden

Before the start of the frost season, you should remove all snags and any wood from the garden. The reason is simple: pest larvae overwinter in their bark. In October, the beds should be dug up so that there are fewer weeds in the spring. It is also worth mulching.

Sowing green manure

Green manure improves soil structure and enriches it with nutrients. Sowing green manure in October will also protect the garden from erosion. The root system of these plants penetrates deep into the soil, loosening it and improving aeration. You can sow winter rye, mustard, vetch, rapeseed, and lupine.

Legumes take nitrogen from the air and convert it into a form available to plants. After preliminary soil tillage (sometimes surface loosening is sufficient), green manure seeds should be sown to a depth of 2-4 cm. But you should be careful with watering. In October, natural rainfall is enough for germination.

New trees and shrubs

October is a good time to plant fruit trees and berry bushes. In general, by winter they will have time to take root and develop a strong root system, and next season you can even expect the first harvest. In October, raspberries, currants, gooseberries, apple trees, walnuts, and plums are planted. It's important to choose winter-hardy varieties so that they can survive the frost.

Planting flowers

In October, you can plant tulips, daisies, forget-me-nots, irises, lupins, and periwinkles. The main thing is to do it on time, taking into account the weather conditions, so that the plants have time to take root before the frost. You can plant roses in mid-October, and lilies of the valley and peonies at the end of the month.
