Stocks will last only 10-20 days: all industrial enterprises in unrecognized Transnistria have stopped working
In Transnistria, all industrial enterprises, except for food processing, have stopped working due to the lack of gas after the termination of Russian gas transit through Ukraine. Energy reserves will last only 10-20 days, which puts the region on the verge of economic collapse.
This was reported by the Russian media regarding the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development of the TMR (Transnistrian Moldavian Republic), Sergey Obolonik. Due to the termination of transit, as well as Gazprom's refusal to redirect supplies via alternative routes, all industrial enterprises in the region stopped working.
How everything stopped
On January 1, Ukraine completely stopped the transit of Russian gas through its pipelines. This was announced by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "When Putin was given power in Russia more than 25 years ago, the annual gas pumping through Ukraine to Europe amounted to 130+ billion cubic meters. Today, the transit of Russian gas is 0. This is one of Moscow's biggest defeats," he said.
Against this backdrop, "Gazprom" decided not to supply gas to Transnistria via alternative routes, which has led to a large-scale energy shortage in the region. "The crisis is so severe that all industrial enterprises have been shut down, except for those that ensure food security in the region," Obolonik said. Due to the lack of gas:
- All industrial enterprises, except for food production, have been completely shut down;
- centralized heating and hot water supply have been cut off;
- gas reserves will last only for 10-20 days, depending on the region.
To partially compensate for the energy shortage, Moldavian SDPP has switched to coal-fired power generation, but this is not enough to maintain normal operations in the region. Obolonik emphasized that the situation is "manageable," but if the gas problem is not resolved soon, the enterprises may lose the opportunity to resume operations.
The energy crisis in Transnistria is also part of a broader problem between Moldova and Russia. "Gazprom" refused to supply gas because of the debts of the Moldovan gas company Moldovagaz, which the Russian side estimates at $709 million. Moldova, for its part, is trying to find alternative solutions:
- Moldovagaz and Energocom buy gas on European platforms;
- gas is transported through Bulgaria, Romania, and Ukraine via the Trans-Balkan corridor;
- however, these supplies are limited and the possibilities to support Transnistria remain minimal.
The situation in Transnistria continues to deteriorate. Currently:
- the lack of gas and limited electricity generation put the region on the verge of economic collapse;
- food enterprises operate only to provide minimal food for the population;
- lack of gas can lead to complete destabilization of the region's life support system.
As OBOZ.UA reported earlier, Turkey may replace Russia as a gas supplier to Europe. They believe that they can cope with this because they already supply natural gas to several European countries, and in addition, they have a fairly developed infrastructure.
