What to do with hydrangeas in January so that they bloom profusely in spring
Hydrangeas are hardy flowers that can survive harsh, cold winter weather, but there is one type of work that should be done in January to ensure that they bloom profusely in spring.
According to gardening experts, now is the perfect time to add some mulch to your hydrangea beds, OBOZ.UA writes.
Mulching is covering the soil surface around the plant with a layer of natural material that helps protect the roots from extreme weather conditions and also decomposes, adding nutrients to the soil.
Gardening experts shared that one of the best mulches for hydrangeas is bark, which can help stop any potential winter damage.
Remove the top inch of compost and replace it with mulch to add a layer of protection for the winter season. This helps not only to insulate the ground around the plant but also protects the soil and its nutrients from the inevitable heavy rain.
In winter, the flowers are likely to die due to the roots constantly freezing and then thawing, which covers the plant with excessive moisture and can cause rot.
Mulching hydrangeas will act as a natural insulator – a protective barrier around the plant that regulates the temperature to prevent root damage.
How to properly mulch hydrangeas in winter
All you need to do is apply a five-centimeter-thick layer of mulch around the soil of your hydrangeas.
Do not apply too much mulch as this can suffocate the roots as water will not be able to penetrate the soil.
Don't forget to leave a gap around the base of the plant (about 10 centimeters) to ensure proper air circulation.
