What ripe pomelo looks like: 5 ways to choose ripe fruit
In winter, pomelos are available in almost all large supermarkets in Ukraine and are relatively inexpensive. The only problem is that not everyone knows how to choose them correctly to fully enjoy their pleasant citrus flavor.
OBOZ.UA tells you how to choose a ripe and tasty pomelo without mistakes.
The color of the pomelo
If you don't know how to choose the perfect pomelo, you risk buying a dry, bitter, or sour fruit. To prevent this from happening, first of all, pay attention to the color of the fruit peel.
Depending on the variety, it can be pink, yellow, or greenish-yellow. The skin should have a uniform color, without spots.
If you see green spots on the pomelo, it means that it is immature.
The shape of the pomelo
A ripe pomelo should be round or pear-shaped. If the fruit is deformed, it means that it grew in poor conditions and tastes unpleasant.
The weight of the pomelo
When choosing a pomelo, pay attention to its weight. Ripe fruit is always heavier than unripe fruit. And very light fruits can be overripe and dry.
Skin texture
The skin of a ripe pomelo should be smooth, firm, and slightly soft. If the skin is too hard, the fruit was picked too early and is most likely sour.
On the other hand, too soft areas on the skin indicate overripeness or damage. This also applies to pomelos with wrinkled or rough skin.
The smell of the pomelo
A ripe pomelo has a pleasant citrus aroma that can be felt when you lightly press the skin. If the fruit does not smell or smells unpleasant, it is not yet ripe or has already begun to deteriorate.
