On Wednesday, December 11, Orthodox Christians commemorate St. Daniel the Stylite, known for his spiritual exploits and steadfastness of faith. Believers prayerfully honor the memory of the saint, recalling his exploits and unbreakable faith.

The saint was born in Mesopotamia to a family that had been waiting for a child for a long time. The mother, Martha, vowed to dedicate her son to God. The boy received the name Daniel after the abbot of the monastery opened the liturgical book and came across the words of the prophet Daniel.

At the age of 12, Daniel secretly left his parents' home to devote himself to the monastic life. His mentor was the abbot of the monastery, and later Daniel met St. Simeon the Stylite, who predicted that he would also serve on a pillar.

For 33 years, St. Daniel lived on a pillar in the Phrygian desert, praying and receiving people who came for spiritual support and healing. The saint completed his earthly journey at the age of 80, leaving behind an example of deep faith and self-sacrifice.

Day of Remembrance of the Jews of Crimea and Krymchaks

On December 11, Ukraine also marks the Day of Remembrance of the Jews of Crimea and Krymchaks who perished during World War II. This date is an important reminder of one of the most tragic pages in the history of the Ukrainian people, including the Crimean Tatar and Jewish people.

It was on this day in 1941 that the Nazis began mass executions of Jews and Krymchaks on the territory of Crimea. Thousands of civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, were ruthlessly murdered. This tragedy was one of the largest crimes committed by the Nazis on the territory of Ukraine.

The Krymchaks were a small Turkic people who practiced Judaism and lived on the territory of Crimea. They had their own language, culture, and religious traditions. Unfortunately, during the Holocaust, the Krymchaks suffered the same fate as the Jews.
