What breakfast looked like in the Middle Ages: a recipe that is still relevant today
A lot of information is known about the Middle Ages. However, some things still remain unknown to us. For example, what did different categories of the population eat in those days? What did they eat for breakfast, and did they eat breakfast at all?
Max Miller, the creator and host of the popular YouTube channel Tasting History, tried to understand this issue. Thanks to his hard work, he can confidently say that yes, people in the Middle Ages did eat breakfast. One of the most popular dishes was Soppes Dorre, which means "golden croutons." Read below to learn how to prepare it correctly.
Ingredients
- Saffron – a pinch
- Sugar – 2 tbsp
- Salt – ½ tsp
- White bread – a few slices
- Almond milk
- Wine.
The presence of alternative milk in this recipe does look strange. But, according to the host, this product dates back to those days. Of course, you couldn't buy it in the store, but it's not hard to make it yourself.
Almond milk was poured into a deep container. Then sugar, salt, and saffron were added. The mixture was slightly heated and then transferred to a plate. Wine and a few large slices of bread were added to the dish.
It is important to note that the highest quality bread was to be used to prepare this dish. It was then that the dish was considered complete and could be served in high society. While in the mixture, the bread softened completely, forming something similar to a soup.
