Ukraine's biathlon team wins relay gold at the IBU Cup
Ukraine's biathlon team has won gold in the mixed relay at the IBU Junior Cup, which is currently taking place in Ridnaun, Italy. Our team, consisting of Stepan Kinash, Vladyslav Chykhar, Oleksandra Merkushyna and Olena Horodna, outperformed rivals from Germany and Italy.
Kinash ran the first stage for the Blue and Yellows. He did not force events, but chose a wait-and-see tactic, which helped him. Although Stepan used one extra round at two firing lines, his rivals made many more mistakes, and Ukraine took the lead before the baton was passed.
Chykhar had a spectacular performance. The representative of the Sumy region whirled across the course, spending only 52 seconds shooting and securing the team's advantage. Merkushyna Jr. maintained the high pace and the Ukrainians entered the final stage with a 32-second lead over Germany.
It was the first time Olena Horodna faced such pressure and she was a little bit nervous. She had to use three extra rounds on the bed at once. But the Ukrainian did a perfect job on the rack, and at the finish line she was 14 seconds behind the Germans and 52 seconds behind the Italians.
It should be noted that this is the first medal of the new biathlon season for Ukraine in all international competitions.
