Ukraine wants to reduce the number of vocational schools by almost 40%
Ukraine should reduce the number of vocational schools and institutions of pre-professional higher education by 35-40%. In addition, the number of schools should be reduced by four times, taking into account the number of high school students.
This was stated by Dmytro Zavhorodnii, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine for Digital Development, Digital Transformation and Digitalization, during the August 2024 Conference. According to him, when modeling the network of specialized secondary education institutions, the Ministry of Education and Science received 1745 proposals from schools that could become academic lyceums and 840 proposals from vocational schools that will operate as vocational lyceums.
"We need to have 35-40% fewer vocational schools and pre-professional higher education institutions than we have now. We also need 4 times fewer general secondary education institutions, given the number of high school students," Zavhorodnii said.
He explained that vocational education and professional higher education institutions would have to be merged to make high schools match the number of high school students.
According to the Deputy Minister of Education, the organizational experience of colleges and vocational schools will be transferred to academic lyceums. For example, if a vocational school has a dormitory that is not used to its full capacity, it can be repaired and transferred to an academic lyceum, Zavhorodnii explains.
