Top 5 flowers not to give to cat or dog owners
As Valentine's Day approaches, everyone is thinking about gifts, including flowers, but there are some that should be avoided if you or, more importantly, the person receiving them has pets, such as dogs or cats.
According to Tails.com's lead vet, Sean McCormack, many of the flowers and plants that are commonly given as gifts can be highly toxic to dogs and cats, the Express reports.
Carnations
Although the specific irritants that cause this toxicity are unknown (whether it's the petals or the stem), it's best not to take any chances. If ingested, carnations can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs.
Lilies
They are toxic to dogs and cats, and in some cases can even be fatal, as some types of lilies contain insoluble oxalate crystals that can be highly irritating to the intestinal system.
If ingested, lilies can cause:
- kidney failure
- convulsions
- slow heart rate
- vomiting
- diarrhea
Daffodils
Although daffodils are beautiful, they are highly toxic to dogs, and the bulbs of these flowers are particularly harmful because they contain lycorine and other dangerous compounds. Consumption of these compounds in large quantities can lead to serious cardiac symptoms.
Dogs that consume daffodils may experience abdominal pain, low blood pressure, arrhythmia, and/or diarrhea.
Roses
Although the thorns are not toxic, if ingested, they can physically damage a dog's mouth, gums, throat, and digestive tract. This can cause cuts, internal blockages, and even infection.
Tulips
Tulips are timeless romantic flowers available in a variety of colors, making them a popular Valentine's Day gift. However, they can be toxic to dogs, as their bulbs contain tulipalin A and B, compounds that can irritate the dog's stomach lining.
